Shoujo Anime….Why People Like It!

Published February 5, 2015 by Shay Taree

This was a topic that this crazy mind of mine thought up and also because I’ve seen quite a few posts about shoujo anime recently. But I was wondering why people enjoy shoujo anime so much?

Now before I get flaming posts about this topic I just want to say that I have NOTHING against shoujo anime. I personally enjoy them a lot and I’m always looking for new ones (feel free to recommend some). I just wanted to know why they are so enjoyable.

I mean is it the storyline, the characters, the music, the animation, the humor (in some cases), or could it just be that it’s anime so why not enjoy it hehe.

But I can’t speak for anyone else but I think why I enjoy shoujo anime is so much is that I love to watch lighthearted anime’s sometimes to just escape and get away from the real world for just a little bit. Also it makes me happen to see someone even if it is someone that isn’t real get their happy ending and see things go right. Plus I’m a total romance kind of girl! I can’t help it!

I also really like the music in this genre of shows, the animation at times can be really clean and sharp, and plus why lie but the guys are always so cute haha.

But seriously why do you enjoy the shoujo genre? I would love to know! Comment down below and like always I will comment back!

Happy Watching ~ Anime Reviewer Girl!

  • mostly the same reasons you mentioned above. Romance of course is the main reason because I’m a girl and i enjoy watching the story of how two people fall in love. another reason is cute / handsome / cool guys! (it might become the main reason sometimes though) ahem. i would like to recommend some shoujo anime that i watched. Fruits Basket (fantasy, kinda old but cute) Hakuouki, Hanasakeru Seishounen, Saiunkoku Monogatari (historical) Lovely★Complex, Kimi ni Todoke, Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, Special A, Sukitte Ii na yo. (typical school shoujo) Skip Beat! (idols?) Vampire Knight (obviously, vampires but not scary) Kamisama Hajimemashita (seaosn 2 currently airing about gods and demons) and Akatsuki no Yona (airing). sorry for the long list. hope you like some of the listed anime. 🙂

  • As someone who enjoys chick flicks and romance movies, I too enjoy the shoujo genre mainly because I never dated before so I wanted to see what love is all about. I think a lot of girls are like that as well because it would explain why the “Twilight” series is super popular. It’s the idea that a relationship with a handsome guy could happen to any average girl. However reading these shoujo genre have its’ negative effects like high expectation when it comes to the real thing. Especially if the guy that confessed to you is not at all handsome (even after a makeover). 😀 Dating in shoujo is so different from the actual dating process. One thing for sure is that not all guys are romantic, handsome or strong like the ones in the shoujo genre.

I recommend: kyou koi wo hajimemasu, Cat Street, Fruits Basket
I have more recommendations but these 3 are the ones that came to mind. Kyou Koi wo hajimemasu is about school romance. Cat Street is about growing up and making friends. It also has romance that sprout out of friendship. I really recommend this greatly because it left a deep impact on me. Lastly is Fruits Basket which is just about love and family. Also very deep considering there still exists Fruits Basket fans now after many years past. 😀

    • I can definitely agree with you when it comes to the expectation aspect of the shoujo genre. I actually can’t help but daydream and wish a guy that I meet would be like the ones in the shoujo genre I love so much.

Hmmm I haven’t see Cat Street or Kyou Koi Wo Hajimenmasu but I have seen Fruits Basket. I wish that Fruits Basket had another season since there was so much more to cover but it was a fabulous series. But I will definitely add the other 2 to my watch or read list.

      • I wish it had another season as well, but I heard the author didn’t want another season because he/she felt it was horrible. It was because how the director avoided a lot of sexual stuff and how these sexual stuff have a major impact to the plot. Not only that, the anime ended in a way that would be hard to start a season 2 since they left out a lot of details. It is similar to Full Metal Alchemist and how the ending was so different from the manga that they did a Full Metal Alchemist 2 (which I didn’t enjoy as much).

      • Awwwww but in that case I hope that a new series is made of Fruits Basket! It was such a good series and manga that I would love to see it animated again.

But for Full Metal Alchemist I actually liked both series. Just because they were both so different from each other. Plus the scene where Mustang fought Lust was just awesome!

      • I did like the fighting scenes in FMA, but I just didn’t like the overall production of Brotherhood. I think it was how the original one had a darker color animation and the Brotherhood had a lighter color animation. It bugged me so much with that contrast. That is to say that Brotherhood wasn’t horrible, it was just the animation that killed it for me. The plot itself was pretty good though since it kept more closely to the manga itself. 😀

      • In case you are kind of still not understanding, another example would be Naruto. Kind of how like in the original Naruto, the designs were more bold and sharp. In the Naruto Shippuden, it is different with it’s less dark colors and more of a pastel feel.
