My Top 5 Psycological Anime’s

Published March 30, 2015 by Shay Taree
Since I recently got one of my friends into watching a great psychological anime I thought it would be cool if I posted my top 5 psychological anime’s. I will also post the synopsis of each series. Also I got the synopsis from!

My top psychological anime’s

Death Note
“Yagami Light is a 17-year-old genius from Japan who is tired of his life, school, and the state of the world as he knows it. One day, on the way home from class, Light stumbles upon a dark notebook with “Death Note” written on the front. Intrigued by its appearance, Light reads the first few sentences, only to find out that it states that anyone whose name is written inside will die. Discarding it as a joke, Light continues his daily activities. Soon after though, his human curiosity takes the better of him and prompts Light to try the notebook, discovering the truth behind the first sentence. Now, with power in his hands, Yagami Light is on a quest to change the world and become God of the New World. His path to holy status won’t be easy however, as another genius, known as L, is working against Light’s beliefs and Light himself. Who will win this power of Gods between humans?”
Elfen Lied
“The Diclonius, a mutated homosapien that is said to be selected by God and will eventually become the destruction of mankind, possess two horns on their heads and have a “sixth sense” which gives them telekinetic abilities. Due to this dangerous power, they have been captured and isolated in laboratories by the government. Lucy, a young and psychotic Diclonius, manages to break free of her confines and brutally murders most of the guards in the laboratory where she is being held, only to be shot in the head as she makes her escape. She survives, falling off a cliff into the ocean and manages to drift along to a beach where two teenagers, Kouta and Yuka, discover her. Having lost her memories, she was named after the only thing that she can now say, “Nyuu,” and the two allow her to stay at Kouta’s home. However, it appears that the psychotic side of Lucy is not dead just yet…”
Higarashi No Naku Koro Ni Series
“After moving into the quiet town of Hinamizawa, Maebara Keiichi spends his days blissfully in school often playing games with his local friends. However, appearances can be deceiving. One fateful day, Keiichi stumbles upon news of a murder that had occurred in Hinamizawa. From this point on, horrific events unfold in front of Keiichi, as he soon learns his close friends may not be all that they seem. Based on the amateur mystery game by 07th Expansion, the story is told in a series of different scenarios.”
Mirai Nikki
“This psychological thriller, based on the manga written and illustrated by Sakae Esuno, is about Yuki, a loner who’s not very good with people. He prefers to write a diary on his cell phone and talk to his imaginary friend, Deus Ex Machina – The God of Time and Space. However, Yuki soon learns that Deus is more than a figment of his imagination when he makes Yuki participate in a battle royale with eleven others. The contestants are given special diaries that can predict the future, each diary possessing unique features that give it both advantages and disadvantages. Within the next 90 days, the contestants must try to survive until there is only one left standing. The winner will become the new God of Time and Space.”
“Watanuki Kimihiro can see spirits and other assorted supernatural creatures, which is quite a bothersome ability he strongly dislikes. On the way home one day, while plagued by some spirits, he is inexplicably compelled to enter a strange house. There, he encounters Yuuko, a mysterious woman who claims to be able to rid him of the ability to see and attract the troublesome creatures—for a price. She demands that he work at her “store” that grants wishes to people, and thus begins Watanuki’s adventures through weird and wonderful events.”

  • The only one I did not see of these are the last one. Higarashi, has to be one of my favorites when it comes to this. I think I would have put Psycho Pass on here as well. If I where to do this list. Other then that it probably would mimic everything but the last one.

    • Yeah the last one was a weird one for me too but I haven’t seen many Psycological Anime’s but I really like them. I do want to see Psycho Pass though.

      • I think Chaos Head would work, although the anime is okay, and rushed. It is by the people who did Stiens Gates, and it came out before it. Neon Genesis Evengellion and that might be it.

      • I haven’t seen Chaos Head but I have heard of it and Stein’s Gate was a really good show!

  • Out of this list, I have seen Death Note twice. The show was so good that I had to watch it. I have heard a little bit about Higarashi, I would not watch it. That shows makes my stomach churned from hearing about the torture scenes. I heard that Mirai Nikki was good, it sounds like a combination of Hunger Games and Death Note. I would not also watch Elfen Lied, this show is beyond gory it makes Mortal Kombat look like a kids game. I have to admit, the opening song was quite unique, it sounded depressing, disturbing but beautiful.

    Aside from that, nice list.

    • Lol thanks! I was actually shocked that I enjoyed both Higarashi and Elfen Lied but they are both very good series once you get pass the gore. But Mirai Nikki was very enjoyable so definitely watch it!

  • Death Note & Mirai Nikki are good choices. Sadly I never watched Elfen Lied or Higarashi No Naku Koro Ni because of how it just gives me shivers. I remember watching a clip of Elfen Lied where the main girl chops someones fingers and body. Same for Higarashi but it was a girl stabbing someone to death. Too much creeps.

    My top 5 would be:
    1. School Days
    2. Mirai Nikki
    3. Death Note
    4. Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro
    5. Gilgamesh

The last 2 (#4 and #5) will leave you contemplating about life and making you feel empty. Cause that is what happened to me.

    • Yeah Higarashi and Elfen Lied are definitely not for those not into gore or who don’t like violence since they have a lot of gore and are violent. But I haven’t seen 4 & 5 on your list but I’m going to add them to my on going to watch list.

  • I haven’t watched any on your list, but it gives me things to put on my list. I really enjoyed Mawaru Penguindrum. While not a thriller, it is chock full of symbolism and will make you think. Also, recently, I just finished Serial Experiments Lain. That one will definitely get you thinking. It is confusing, but well worth a watch.
