If Anime Became Mainstream?

Published June 3, 2015 by Shay Taree

So I know that there are some anime’s that have broken through that obscure barrier and have become mainstream shows. Shows such as Bleach, Naruto, Pokemon, and Dragon Ball Z. But what would happen if anime as a whole became mainstream?

I mean if anime started airing on the major network channels and airing during prime times and not just at night I think it would be awesome. I think it would give more people the chance to know what anime was about and it would get rid of those assumptions (possibly) that anime is only for kids.

Anime should be mainstream considering that there are now so many shows that have a huge following that are considered nerdier  shows. Sorry I couldn’t think of a better way to phrase but I’ve just been noticing that uprising of shows that seem to cater to an audience that is more on the nerdier or dorkier side. Plus I love it and I think its time that anime made its debut in a primetime slot. I’m so tired of anime seeming to be something that has to be hidden and I think its time for everyone to enjoy it.

So do you think its time for anime to become  mainstream? Also what do you think would happen of it did?  Or do you think anime shouldn’t be mainstream. Comment down below because I can’t wait to read what you all have to say.

  • If it did then the entire medium would be toned down and then it would have boundaries with what creators could do, shows like Highschool DxD and anything extremely dark would be toned down or wiped out so I am happy it’s more of a niche thing 🙂

    • I’m not so sure. I think if anime got that popular the only thing that would restrict the producers is when the anime aired. Just like movies aimed at older audiences air after ‘bed time’, more mature anime would do the same 🙂 .

I’d love for anime to get more mainstream here in the UK. I think that it’s popular enough to at least get one dedicated TV channel. They’d just need to choose the right shows to air and do simulcasts with subs etc. Ahhh the possibilities.

      • Yes I would love if anime had their own channel. Out here in the states Funimation has its own channel but its only available with one cable provider which sucks.

      • Yeah it’s about time anime got some real exposure in mainstream entertainment. TV companies don’t really have much to be afraid of. Maybe it’s just the fact that I’ve been on the internet a lot recently, but I feel like anime is becoming more and more popular, especially in places like the USA. It’s definitely got a big enough audience to be profitable.
The fact that companies are investing more into English dubs shows this.

Thanks for replying. Love this blog 🙂

      • You’re very welcome and thank you for liking my blog! But I also have to agree that anime is getting more of following recently and I love it. I think that companies are afraid of losing money if a show isn’t successful but I think it’s a chance that a company should take. I mean you never know what may happen.

      • I agree, if anime as a whole went “mainstream” then it would do more damage to the medium in a way because some shows are given the spotlight and some aren’t regardless of how good they actually are :/

      • But I feel like that would be with any show. If you look at TV as a whole then there are some shows that do well and are popular while there are others that while some people love not many people are tuning it. But you won’t know until they start airing.

      • Yes I think the anime’s that are darker should get some limelight too so it can get rid of the stereotype that anime is only for kids or young people when its not.

    • I honestly didn’t think about that but I have to agree since that is kind of what happened with the anime’s that are mainstream.

  • death note and attack on titan are very much main stream where i’m from (I see loads of posters and T-shirts). ^_o durarara, bleach and gintama are not that far behind in notoriety .

  • I think it will be interesting to see anime be mainstreamed. Many people will understand what you are talking about and everybody will try to jump in to fit in. Maybe, just maybe, this could bring back the FUNimation channel that was on TV once upon a time.

    • The fumigation channel is on TV but its only offered with one provider but I’m hoping that it will expand and it won’t cost extra to have.

      • Yeah I currently have ATT U-Verse and they have the funimation cannel but you have to add it onto your current package at an extra cost.

  • I think that sounds awesome! I remember when I was just but little sprite that I grew up on anime! I watched Inu Yasha and Cowboy Bebop(Not exactly good shows for three year olds) and Videos on YouTube that were songs with clips of the Tokyo Mew Mew anime. Then when my Bio mom took me and my brother back to her place of birth,Texas and when I started Kindergarten I talked about all this anime stuff to my friends they had no idea what I was talking about. Even when I talking about Studio Gibli movies! But I’m glad that in fifth grade that my friend Ari and I had a similarity. She introduced me to Vocaliod and we really enjoyed it. So if it became Mainstream I wouldn’t have so people not know what in the world I was talking about.

    • Yup plus I think if it was mainstream we would have another way to watch it besides on laptops or subscription services.
