Are Anime Streaming Subscriptions Worth It?

Published August 26, 2015 by Shay Taree

So when I mean anime subscriptions I mean subscriptions like Crunchyroll and Funimation. I have subscriptions to both and I have for a while so I wanted to do a review on both and if they are worth it.
So Crunchyroll’s

subscription is $6.95 a month and this only for anime this is not for is you also want to have a subscription to their manga service. When you have a subscription to Crunchyroll it pretty much gives you access to the latest anime as soon as it is released of its a series that is currently airing and no commercials. If you don’t have a subscription then you have wait a week from the original airing to see an episode and you have commercials.

Then you have  Funimations

subscription which you pay 7.95 a month a then you have access to exclusive videos with everything from voice actors interviews to panel interviews at conventions. Also if your someone that likes to watch dubs like myself you can also want the dub. Overall it’s actually a pretty amazing service and I like my subscription to it.

I know that many people are going to be like I can just watch it for free on several other sites so why pay. Well the main reason why I pay is to support the industry and plus I like watch my anime with out commercials. I know it’s not ideal for many people but I find it to be pretty worth it. Now I know that there are more but I mostly just wanted to talk about Crunchyroll and Funimation’s streaming services.

But let me know what you think of these subscriptions. If you have them let me know what you think of them and why you got them. I can’t wait to read your comments.

  • Almost 2 years ago we cut ties with our cable company and bought a Roku. Best decision we ever made. Now, we subscribe to Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Funimation. We get more programs than we could watch in a lifetime between the 3 and they are constantly updating.

I definitely agree about the perks of Funimation: it’s nice to get commercial-free dubbed episodes and all the other little perks. I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many series we’ve watched using their service. And the list only grows…. I’d recommend it to anyone that has access. Sorry to anyone that doesn’t.

  • Out of any service, I am definitely most tempted by Crunchyroll’s since they also have the manga section. I know one year they did a discount on a subscription during Black Friday, so I thought they would do it again the next year. They didn’t, so I ended up not subscribing. I did a two week trial, and I enjoyed the features, but…I don’t know. I just can’t get myself to pull the trigger right now.

  • i ‘have’ both lol i paid for funimation subs only and my brother’s a crunchyroll subscriber, we also have a roku which is where i do most of my watching. oh and we pay the years subscription rather than the monthly, it takes off a bit from the monthly price and if you plan to have it for a long time I’d say that’s a better deal (there’s also no worry about having the money in the bank account every month)

it’s worth it if you actually watch a lot of anime, i’ve only just started watching anime again which is why i got the funimation subscription, before i just shared crunchyroll with my brother (and before that i watched on random anime sites)

    • Yeah it’s definitely worth it if you watch a lot of anime. Plus it’s easier then having to search for those less legal sites that have the show you want to watch.

    • p.s. ^-o anime dvd’s cost between £20-£30 making the price of one episode about £1.70 – £2.50

By watching just 2-3 episode on this site I have made a huge saving on my legal anime viewing (I use legal sites because the quality is much better).

      • So true and plus I notice that stores like Best Buy has an anime collection that is getting smaller and smaller.

    • arent dvds really expensive recently? @_@ thats why i’ve put a hold on my anime buying, just part 1 of a series costs what i pay for a yearly subscription

      • They can be. If I want to watch a new anime series without buying the entire series, I just buy one episode from iTunes or Google Play. I also watch free English Dub anime from Neon Alley, One Piece Official, and Crunchyroll (only some anime are available in English dub)

      • ohhhh ok yeah i don’t like buying anime in non-physical form xD i haven’t seen many that have come out as the complete series though?

      • I can imagine that. I try to avoid going broke and find ways to watch anime legally and safe. There is always YouTube to watch, but sometimes the people of YouTube might take down shows because of copyright laws.

    • I also used to wait for the DVD and I still buy a few of its a series that I really enjoy. The only thing is several places have shrank down their anime collections.
