Anime Breaks….😴

Published May 18, 2015 by Shay Taree

I just thought of this topic while watching anime this morning while getting ready for work. The current anime in watching I’ve been watching for a while since due to work and other things I haven’t been able to finish it. But it got me thinking about has anyone taken a break from anime or manga to do other things that interest them.

I know that I have and it was when I was in middle school and into some of high school when I wasn’t watching anime at all. At the time it didn’t interest me as much as it does now but still it was a break. It was actually cool to take a break since it got me to explore other interests that I had. Also just to let everyone know I’m not going to be taking a break anytime soon it was just a anime discussion topic I had thought of.

Anyways, have any of you ever taken a break from anime and if so how long was it for? What did you do while on that break and what made you come back to watching anime? I would love to know. Comment down below with your answers.

P.S. I’ve been thinking of starting another blog but this one will be a little bit more personal and one for everyone to enjoy. It won’t be about anime a whole lot but it’s going to just be about life in general. Comment down below about that as well since I would like to know if anyone is interested in a blog like that.

  • I don’t remember exactly but when I was in High School, I took a couple weeks break from anime and turned my attention to Marvel stuff. I was mostly into Spider-Man and the movies.

      • Currently, after watching the Age of Ultron movie, my interest with Marvel and Anime are clashing with each other in my head. Both are cool genres.

      • If you are talking about a crossover story, I believe a year ago Marvel comics and Attack on Titan did a crossover story where the Avengers took on the Titans in New York. The creator of Attack on Titans was in charge of the story and he wanted to do a “what-if” story.

In the anime world, they did do 4 different series based on the Marvel characters. They did series on Wolverine, Iron Man, Blade, and the X-men. They even did an anime direct to DVD starring Black Widow and the Punisher; it was called Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher.

    • Just curious, were you into the Marvel comics or just the movies? Cause it would be interesting to know how you were able to switch from anime to comics (esp since there drawing styles are so different).

I also got to say Spider-Man is the best (the original movie, not the remake movie). I think people mention the remake is true to the comic, but I can’t do a cool Peter Parker. I’m used to the nerdy Peter. 😀

      • To be honest, I am not an expert of any comic books, I watch the movies and then research the background info. I watch the movies and then research on the heroes and villains from the comics. Sometimes I would switch it around, especially when I first heard about Ultron. I research to understand who and what about the characters.
I am used to the trilogy Spider-Man rather than the Amazing Spider-Man. I like the Amazing version but I guess I grew accustomed to the Tobey Maguire version. I like how the Amazing Spider-Man had Peter Parker with Gwen Stacy like in the comics.

      • oh I see. Another question, are you only Marvel? or are you DC as well? I heard it’s like a raging battle between these two.

Especially people telling me that Marvel dominate movies while DC dominate tv series.

      • I prefer Marvel. I like DC as well, but I mostly like Batman and Superman. I hear that DC does good with tv series and Marvel’s Daredevil is also good.

I have heard of a comic series where Marvel and DC comics temporary formed together to make a series. It was called Amalgam comics. We had combined heroes and villains like Wolverine and Batman, and Joker and Sabertooth. I wish to read those comics.

      • Didn’t know about the Amalgam comics, but it definitely be cool if they created a movie with both Marvel and DC members. Kind of similar to Avengers, in the sense that characters collide with one another in the same movie.

      • I recently found out about those comics in the comment sections of IGN. I believe the article was a list different type Avengers in chronological order and somebody mentioned this in the comments. If it is was possible to combine these two comic universe in a movie, then I would pay to see it more than once.

      • That would be a dream if that happens considering how hard it is to gain rights to both Marvel and DC. I remember someone was saying how it took Avengers a while before they got the right to Spiderman from Sony.

  • Alright I had something like that. It was when i was in a toatal Pokemon phase. I took a break from it(including all anime) and a lot of drawing different things(because I was drawing a ton of Pokemon stuff). I even came up with a ‘chibi’ style for Invader Zim. What took me back to the world of anime was when I was doing a project for my church. I was drawing the story of Ester. I wanted to give Queen Ester some fabulous hair. remembered that this Goddess named Belldandy from one of my mom’s manga had beautiful hair. So I started drawing the story in anime. Also I took a Vocaliod break once. My friend Katlin said that she went through s Vocaliod phase like I was and said that I would get over it. I wanted to get over it so when I listening to music on YouTube I didn’t search up any Vocaliod songs that I knew. But one day I realized that I missed them and came running back to their musical arms. As you can tell by my profile picture. Although Vocaliods are drawn in the anime style I’m not sure they count for this kind of break.

    • To me that definitely counts and that’s really cool about how you came back into enjoying anime. I think breaks from things we like can definitely be a good thing since it helps us to remember why we enjoyed it in the first place.

    • Lol. That’s me last year. I came to college and got really into SNSD but now the hype kind of died down for me. Now i’m just moving into different realms of entertainment when I find something interesting. Not to say I don’t listen to kpop, I still do, but the excitement of kpop is not the same as last year.

      • lol. I understand that feels. I was shock that Jessica was kicked out of SNSD. Though I’m not a follower of KARA, I got to say that I like Youngi (the new Kara member) a lot. She’s cute. Plus they had an amazing comeback with Mamma Mia.

  • I go through phases. Sometimes I get burnt out on anime so I take a break and return to it at a later date. Longest break? Well I watched anime when I was a kid, but then stopped when I got into football and games. I got back into the hobby once I got a job and had cash to burn on DVDs.

    • That kind of sounds like me. As a kid I really liked anime but once I became a teenager I kind of drifted from it but came back right before entering college.

  • Went to visit friends for the purpose of a weekend of playing live action role playing games. Didn’t watch any anime…did read some manga though so not a complete getaway. It is good to take a break especially if you blog about it…I find sometimes I get a bit rusty & stale. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing.

    • Yeah since I do blog about it can sometimes make it feel like watching anime is a chore which is why I like posting discussion questions more.

  • Yes, I take periodic breaks from anime and manga, usually to read books or to just chill and rest my brain. I don’t have a regular schedule that I follow regarding these breaks, but I take them whenever I feel like it.

      • Indeed. It’s also good to relax your brain now and again. Anime & manga are awesome (of course) but sometimes we need to take breaks from them, so that we feel refreshed and more focused when we resume watching them again. Anyway, keep on watching anime (with breaks now & then). Cheers!

  • For me, I took a break last year from anime and started to be into korean dramas, kpop and american tv shows (Games of Thrones, etc). Now I’m going back to anime, but not at the extent I had in high school.

I guess my fascination and excitement died down. It’s the same for me and kdrama right now. I was so fascinated by their beautiful actress and hd drama but now it’s getting boring. I started to switch to jdrama and a bit of anime on the side. lol. I guess this is what college does to you. It makes you experiment with different hobbies.

  • Not really a break per say..I kind of mix up what I watch on a regular basis. I got caught up on the first 2 seasons of Arrow, most of Orange Is The New Black, Doctor Who, Arrested Development, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, etc. I try to keep a mix of things going so I don’t get too burnt out on one thing.

    • I also try to keep a mix as well but I do have times when I get obsessed with one thing. But also I love Orange Is The New Black! Can’t wait for new season!

  • As long as there’s one good simulcast in the season, or I’m alternating with an old classic, I’ll probably be into anime for quite a while. I mean, I take a week break every now and then, but that’s usually because I’m busy with other things, not not-interested in anime. It can be exhausting and even repetitive just sitting and reading subs or relaxing with dubs – sometimes I think to myself “there’s got to be a more interesting way to watch this,” and that’s usually when I plan out a whole week, building up to 2 days of solid binge watching, like my Evangelion experience. As for two blogs, it’ll be a lot of work, and you might notice a quality dip in your work after a while. But if you are determined and have the time, there is no harm in trying – you’ve already got one curious follower right here! 🙂

    • I’ve never thought about planning out my week when it comes to anime and I may try it. But as far as the 2 blogs are concerned yes it would be a lot and I’m still in the thinking process when it comes to actually doing it. But thanks for your input.
